I was enrolled in soccer when I was four and played until I graduated high school. Throughout that time I played striker and defense. When I was young I enjoyed scoring goals and outrunning my opponent, but when I got older I realized that offense wasn’t for me. My mind couldn’t process potential moves and my feet were too clumsy. Thus, defense became my friend and new home. I enjoyed playing defense, it was a completely different experience but I quickly excelled at it. I played for my school and played for a select club. In club soccer we won state one year and our division a few years. But enough about me.
Soccer, the sport that has recently become more popular with people throughout the U.S. is a great sport. Most people don’t understand the fascination and skill behind it. I’ve heard people say that all the players do is run and kick a ball. If that’s the case then why is American football so popular? All they do is throw a ball and run around. Soccer deserves all the recognition and popularity that it has achieved. Sure, maybe I’m biased but the sport is popular throughout the world so it only makes sense that it will gain popularity here.
As for all this drama around Hope Solo. The U.S. women’s team had the chance to ban Solo for a few matches or even kick her off the team. However, they didn’t. This decision was weak on their part. The U.S. team should stand for America’s beliefs and values. Allowing her to continue playing and representing the U.S. is a mistake and sends the wrong message, that celebrities (athletes) are above reprimand.
A reason why they might have not taken any action against Solo is because the U.S. women will hold their World Cup in 2015 and are undergoing qualifiers. The team plays on the 15th, 17th and 20th.
Domestic violence is a serious charge. Especially since she supposedly hit her sister and 17 year old nephew. Even if she was inebriated she could have left and not resorted to violence.
One final note, Landon Donovan played his last game for the USMNT at the age of 32. Solo is 33. She should retire too even though she’s a goalie.
Thoughts? Opinions?
